China XXIth century. Art between Identity and Transformation
February 19th - may 18th 2008

This exhibition is designed to offer a first-hand experience of contemporary Chinese art as represented in recent works by the leading artists of the new generations, exceptional figures recognized at the international level such as Chen Chieh-Jen, Liu Xiaodong, Sun Yuan e Peng Yu, Wang Du, Wang Qingsong, Weng Fen, Yang Fudong, Yang Yong, Yang Zhenzhong, Yan Lei, Yin Zhaoyang, Zeng Fanzhi, Zhang Xiaogang and Zheng Guogu. These are artists who examine the impact of present-day society on personal experience through their work and protest against the alienation of the individual in the modern urban environment. A new sensibility began to take shape in contemporary Chinese art around 1995 together with the birth of the "dual society" marked by the coexistence of communism and capitalism, the result of the radical social transformation of China commenced halfway through the 1990s and of unprecedented importance in the country's history. Many artists have established close dialogue with the sections of society undergoing change. The new social and urban landscape emerges in their work: towering architectural works, images of mass consumption, social chaos, nihilism and hyperrealism. This initial trend has itself undergone gradual transformation and led to new visual experiences. Exploration of the self, reflection on personal identity and how this has been modified by the onset of new social conditions. In this context, art presents itself as a healing reaction to changes in the social, cultural and political structures.
